It's not often that a brand can say they were born from the amalgamation of too much whisky and a stuffed Penguin called Pete, but that is exactly where the idea for an Original Penguin arrived!
Abbot Pedersen was working for the Munsingwear Undergarment factory in 1955 and had some time to kill before his flight home after a sales trip to New York City.
Like most of us guys enjoy a drink now and again, Abbot found himself having a few drinks at a bar. After stumbling outside he took a wrong turn and ended up down one of the New York back alleys in front of a taxidermist window, with a row of recently stuffed penguins all looking back at him.
Abbot couldn't resist and bought Pete (the Original Penguin) to help him continue the party on the plane ride home. Pete partyed a bit too hard and his head fell off, so with the help of a kind stewardess, Abbot took of his tie and wrapped it around the penguins neck.
On his return to Minneapolis Abbot Pederson created the Munsingwear golf shirt and was an instant hit with locals and celebrities alike. Today this shirt is known as the "55".
So forget your Emperors, Chinstrap and Macaronis! The only penguin name you need to remember is Pete, an Original Penguin by Munsingwear!
